The Granny Hat: A Quick and Fun Crochet Hat Pattern

The Granny Hat

This hat is made from the classic granny stitch: little groups of three double crochet, worked in rounds from the top of the crown down. It is quick, it uses up leftover yarn, and the open texture looks great in stripes.

If you have made a granny square, you already know the stitch. The photos show the crown, the straight rounds and the band.

The Granny Hat Step by Step

What You’ll Need

  • Sport / fine (size 2) cotton yarn: worsted (size 4) yarn in 3 colours: mustard, cream and rust, about 100 g in total
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Optional: a faux fur pompom
  • Tapestry needle, sewing pins and a stitch marker

The finished size depends on your yarn and hook: thicker yarn and a bigger hook make a bigger piece.

Crown (mustard, then cream, make 1)

  • Make a magic ring.
  • Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the ring, (ch 1, 3 dc in the ring) 5 times, ch 1. Slip stitch to the top of the ch 3 (6 clusters).
  • Round 2: slip stitch into the first ch-1 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the same sp again (corner of clusters). In each ch-1 sp around: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc). Join (12 clusters).
  • Round 3: change to cream. Work 1 cluster in every sp around, with ch 1 between clusters (12 clusters, 12 sp), but in every 2nd sp work 2 clusters (18 clusters).
  • Round 4: as Round 3, working 2 clusters in every 3rd sp (24 clusters). The crown should now lie flat and measure about 17 cm across; if not, add one more round.

FAQ

What size does it fit?

Measure your crown: it should be about 17 cm across for an average adult. Add or remove a round of increases to change the size.

Can I use one colour?

Yes. The granny texture looks good in one colour too; stripes just make it more playful.

Why does my crown ruffle?

Too many increases. Pull back the last round and increase in fewer spaces.
